“[…] a sad tale's best for winter [….]”
yesterday
A winter’s tale:
an old wives’ tale, an idle tale, a story to wile along the long cold hours of winter. A fable
grounded in the workings of unreality and the pursuit of a happy ending.
today
Leontes is married to Hermione.
Mamillius is their son.
Polixenes is Leontes’ best friend.
As the family sit down to hear a winter’s tale, Leontes’ jealousy threatens to destroy his
family and his state.
tomorrow
A new story of reconciliation begins.
Leontes’ daughter is alive.
She falls in love with Polixenes’ son.
In their inaugural production, HELIKON THEATRE COMPANY reworks
Shakespeare’s most illusive work and its compulsion towards a happy ending.
“[…] we are mocked with art […]”
